| Review | In the planning and implementation phases of medical research and clinical trials, initiatives in which patients, their families, and members of the public participate as partners are referred to as “Patient and Public Involvement (PPI)”. In recent years, such initiatives have been spreading worldwide. This book is a collection of papers by medical sociologists from various countries that explore the significance and challenges of PPI through case studies. Associate Professor Junji Kayukawa contributed the paper “Patient and Public Involvement in Healthcare Research”. In this chapter, he reviews the history of communication between the Radiation Effects Research Foundation in Hiroshima and second-generation atomic bomb survivors, reinterpreting and discussing it as a pioneering example of PPI. |
