Growing into Someone Who Can Share the Appeal of Japanese Culture in English

Meeting a University Where I Could Build and Develop the Foundation for My Dreams

Inspired by my study‑abroad experience in high school, I had a vague desire to share Japan’s unique culture with the world. Although I sensed that “Japan is not well known overseas,” I could not clearly identify what the challenge was—whether it was the language, traditional crafts, food culture, or something else.

I began looking for a university even though I still didn’t know exactly what I wanted to specialize in. I felt that choosing a narrowly defined major too early might limit my future possibilities, so I sought an education rooted in liberal arts.

At Eikei University of Hiroshima’s Faculty of Social System Design, I felt I would not be confined to a single specialized field. Instead, I could first discover the areas that truly interest me and then deepen my learning from there. That confidence led me to choose this university.

Discovering “Alcohol” as a Tool for Sharing Japanese Culture Through Hands-On Experience

Through a Domestic Internship Program in the Experiential and Practical Programs, I interned at a craft gin distillery in Fukushima Prefecture. It was there that I became interested in the field of alcohol, and I found a theme that I wanted to pursue in order to “share Japan’s unique culture” with the world.

Alcohol is loved globally as a beverage of enjoyment, and it carries many layers of appeal—craftsmanship, the passion of its makers, and the stories and cultural backgrounds embedded in its creation. Inspired by what I learned during the internship, I chose this theme for my Degree Project. As a result, I was able to achieve the goal I had set before entering university: to help spread Japanese culture.

What had once been a vague sense of “Japan’s cultural challenges” became something I could define clearly, analyze academically, and ultimately propose solutions for. Being able to shape my ideas through my university learning and carry them through to completion was an experience that brought me a strong sense of accomplishment.
