Title: Jobutsu no design 〜How to create a Japanese upcycling brand〜
Speaker: Mr. ISHII Takayuki
Venue: Eikei Top, 15th floor at Eikei University of Hiroshima
Brief Abstract of Lecture:
Is the act of design merely about endlessly creating new things? Could we not design the moment of parting, the way we depart, with greater care?
In 2023, we launched “SHANARI SHIRTS”, gathering cherished kimonos have been laying in wardrobes and reviving them as shirts, along with their memories. In Japan, kimonos are prepared by grandmothers as part of a bride’s trousseau, or passed down from mothers. These garments, steeped in family history, are treasured and stored away even if no longer worn daily. The time finally came to sort through them. Sell them? No, they wouldn’t fetch anything. Throw away them? No, it felt too painful. Then a third option emerged: ‘Pass them on to others.’ What stories might unfold between ex-owners and customers? I shall speak of designing a peaceful passing.
