Contributing to Urban Development in Hiroshima Through Acquired Competencies

Before entering Eikei University of Hiroshima, I aspired to study aerospace engineering and become involved in rocket development as an engineer. However, I began to think that rather than being confined to a specific technology or field, gaining a broad education and understanding entire systems might offer a better path to solving complex societal issues. This led me to choose Eikei University of Hiroshima. I was particularly drawn to its international perspective and the opportunity to take classes in English alongside multinational students. Although I hadn’t decided on a specific career path, I was eager to expand my potential through diverse learning experiences.

One of the most memorable classes at university was “Project-Based Learning,” where I tackled real-world challenges proactively and collaboratively in teams. In exercises that involved solving regional issues in partnership with businesses and government agencies, I learned practical approaches through fieldwork and interviews with stakeholders—far beyond theoretical study. In a project focused on revitalizing local tourism, our team proposed strategies aimed at increasing visitor numbers and boosting the regional economy. We conducted data analysis to identify strengths and challenges in the area and explored feasible solutions. Discussions with corporate and government representatives helped me appreciate the importance of diverse perspectives. Through this experience, I developed strategy and energetic drive to propose realistic, actionable solutions.

My aspirations and vision evolved significantly through my studies and experiences at university. In particular, my involvement in urban development activities in Hiroshima made me keenly aware of the need to enhance the city’s appeal and vitality. Faced with challenges such as population decline and economic stagnation, I came to believe that finding concrete ways to contribute to the local community is essential. Working with urban development organizations in Hiroshima taught me the importance of not just recognizing problems but also implementing solutions. This experience was a turning point, inspiring me to explore the potential of water transportation and develop a hovercraft business concept.

After graduation, I plan to launch a startup called Suito Hiroshima Corporation, with the goal of making Hiroshima a more attractive city by promoting urban development that balances functionality and environmental sustainability. Specifically, I aim to develop water transportation systems using rivers in central Hiroshima. The city’s rivers experience significant tidal fluctuations, making profitability difficult under current methods. However, by optimizing vessel types, user demographics, and route efficiency, I believe the business can be viable. Additionally, I hope to explore new uses for riverside spaces around docking areas and contribute to enhancing the region’s appeal through innovative spatial utilization.

To future students and juniors, I want to emphasize the importance of taking on challenges rather than simply spending four years at university passively. If your only goal is to gain knowledge or succeed in job hunting, the internet might suffice. But university offers a unique environment where you can pursue your goals without hesitation, learn from failure, and keep trying until you succeed. Eikei University of Hiroshima brings together highly motivated students who challenge and support each other. With strong support from faculty and staff, I’ve been inspired by students across different years and continue striving toward my goals. I hope incoming students will also choose to expand their potential and embrace new possibilities.
